What is Yoga Nidra?

A guided meditation that takes you beyond ordinary relaxation

Yoga Nidra uses verbal imagery and sensory awareness to guide you into deeper states of meditation. It is also known as Yoga Sleep — a mental state between sleep and waking that allows your mind to reach levels of relaxation not accessible through ordinary meditation.

This technique is especially powerful for people new to meditation, or for those with overactive thoughts that prevent them from going deeper. You lay back and relax completely as Shanel takes you on a personalized journey.

A Sankalpa is a short, personal statement of intention you hold in your mind throughout your Yoga Nidra session. It acts as a seed planted in your deepest state of awareness where the mind is most open and receptive. Your Sankalpa gives your journey focus, meaning, and direction.

Sankalpa
A goal, resolution, or intention you set while beginning your Yoga Nidra meditation. Unlike ordinary affirmations, a Sankalpa is held in the hypnagogic state where it reaches the subconscious directly.

Before your session

What to know before you begin

A few simple preparations help you get the most from your Yoga Nidra experience.

Get comfortable
You can lie down or sit. Avoid your bed as it encourages sleep. Use pillows, bolsters, blankets, or an eye pillow to support deeper relaxation. Weighted blankets are also beneficial.
Find a quiet space
Choose a space free from distractions, wind, and noise. A calm environment allows your mind to drop into the meditative state more easily and completely.
Practice on an empty stomach
Meditation is best practiced at least 2 hours after eating or on an empty stomach. Digestion pulls energy inward and can prevent deeper states of awareness.
